How Xiaomi's under the display camera works ?

Xiaomi and Oppo has been actively working on an under the screen camera for months now. Both the companies are trying to get rid of the notch as well as pop-up cameras by creating transparent display cameras that could hide the sensors beneath the screens.

A couple of days ago the Chinese manufacturers, Xiaomi and Oppo, both posted a teaser and a video of their working prototype of the transparent display cameras, repectively.

Wang Xiang, Xiaomi's Senoir Vice President, shared some images on his twitter handle showing the technology. According to Xiaomi, the camera will be placed in it's regular position,i.e., on top of the device without a notch, punch hole or a pop up camera, but under the display.

The display around the camera will be transparent, with a "special low reflective glass with high transmittance". The company revealed that the area around the display becomes transaparent while clicking the photos and when the user is not taking photos the display works normally. The transparent display actually works like a lens of the camera.

The comapny is using transparent anode and cathode around the organic luminescent material, which allows outside light to reach the camera placed under the OLED display. In a normal display the anode and cathode are not transparent and hence enough light can't reach under the display. Xiaomi also notes that by not trying to make the camera (and, therefore, the inevitable notch) as small as possible, the transparent display system allows for a larger sensor and better image quality than its existing teardrop notches.

The technology is not perfect yet, but Xiaomi said, that it is currently exploring the possibilities and working on solutions with a 20MP under the display sensor.
